Current Affairs (Black Isle Group 1)

Status:Active, not currently accepting new members
Email:
When: On Tuesday afternoons
Three weekly
Venue: Members' houses

The group meets approximately every three weeks in member’s homes. The host chairs the meeting with each member contributing a topic for discussion.

We are limited to a membership of 12 by the size of our sitting rooms and to allow all members to contribute during the meeting. Some members can not accommodate all the group so give a set number and allocate places on a first come basis.

This group is currently full, but a second Black Isle group has recently been set up - see here for details.

Our meeting nearest Christmas normally happens over a meal.

Discussions ranged over political and social issues and examples of last year’s topics included:-

  • Is making maths compulsory until 18 a good idea?
  • What are our responsibilities beyond our shores?
  • What do you expect/hope to see in the budget this week and as part of that how should child care be provided/funded?
  • Have we got more to fear than to gain from artificial intelligence?
  • Student fees, should they be means tested?
  • What single object could you not do without to manage and live your life?
  • Is there any chance of environmental balance through democracy?
