Current Affairs (Inverness)

Status:Active, open to new members

When: On Wednesday afternoons 2:15 pm
Three weekly
Venue: Members' houses

We cannot always rely on broadcasters and the press to tell us every side of a news story; sometimes they are completely silent on important events and topics. As we believe it is important to be well-informed about what is really happening, we try to seek out the facts to allow people to judge for themselves.

If you are interested in current affairs, would like to be better informed or enjoy the cut and thrust of debate, this could be the group for you.

New members are always welcome; if you'd like to join us, contact the group leader, Andrew Fraser, via the email link above.

The group normally meets at 3 week intervals at a group member's house. Meetings start at 2.15 pm on Wednesdays. The meetings usually last for about 2 hours after which our host provides us with a cuppa and a bite to eat, which we take turns to provide.

Our meetings

The format of our meetings is that usually all members are invited to bring an item of news which has caught their attention and would like to share with the others. It may be intended to provoke discussion or it may be purely a matter for information. It can be a serious matter or just quirky or amusing.

Sometimes a member will offer to speak longer on a topic of interest and perhaps present a paper for others to read and keep. Any subject which comes up will provoke comment, sometimes critical, but we do not fall out with each other!

Have you ever wondered:

  • How can we be governed by a party with a huge majority, but which is supported by just 1 in 5 of the electorate?
  • Why is the conflict in the Middle East so intractable?
  • Are freedom of speech and the rule of law threatened by powerful and intolerant groups?
  • Is AI more beneficial than harmful?
  • Why in an energy rich country do we have the dearest electricity in Europe?
