The Science Group has around ten members with interests in science, engineering and medicine. We meet monthly on the third Thursday of each month to consider a particular topic, and we have a discussion amongst the group to explore it. We hope to issue a list of topics in advance so that people can think about them beforehand and do some research if they want to.
Meetings usually start with a review of some of the latest science news, and then discussion of other topics of interest to members. Anyone can join the group. It is not necessary to be a scientist, engineer, astronomer or mathematician.
New members are always welcome. For more information contact David Martland via the email link above.
Previous topics have included:
- Development of the Victorian era London Sewer system by Joseph Bazalgette.
- An overview of the life and ideas of Donald Mackay
- Eclipses
- Extinction events 65 million years ago due to an asteroid impact in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
- Volcanoes - and predicting eruptions
Future topics may include:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Radio Frequency ID tags
- Fractals and the Mandelbrot set
- Engineering aircraft for fuel efficiency and environmental sustainability
- The harmonic series and its importance for science and technology generally
