The Science Group has around ten members with interests in science, engineering and medicine. We meet monthly on the third Thursday of each month to consider a particular topic, and we have a discussion amongst the group to explore it. We hope to issue a list of topics in advance so that people can think about them beforehand and do some research if they want to.

Meetings usually start with a review of some of the latest science news, and then discussion of other topics of interest to members. Anyone can join the group. It is not necessary to be a scientist, engineer, astronomer or mathematician.

New members are always welcome. For more information contact David Martland via the email link above.

Previous topics have included:

  • Development of the Victorian era London Sewer system by Joseph Bazalgette.
  • An overview of the life and ideas of Donald Mackay
  • Eclipses
  • Extinction events 65 million years ago due to an asteroid impact in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
  • Volcanoes - and predicting eruptions

Future topics may include:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Radio Frequency ID tags
  • Fractals and the Mandelbrot set
  • Engineering aircraft for fuel efficiency and environmental sustainability
  • The harmonic series and its importance for science and technology generally
