60+ Pickleball
Pickleball is a fast-growing sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. It is easy to learn, sociable, and great fun, while also supporting mobility, fitness, and overall wellbeing.
We usually play doubles, on an indoor court similar in size to a badminton court. Players use lightweight paddles to hit a plastic ball over a low net. The game is quick to learn, low-impact, and particularly well suited to older players, with short games that reward skill and placement rather than power.
We play once a week, with session types and venues alternating on a weekly basis. Session types include:
- Coaching and game play: combining skills practice and drills with match play (currently aimed at improver level).
- Game play:where players mix in, playing short games with different partners.
- Combined Gentle Pickleball and Introduction to Pickleball: designed for new players and for those who prefer a slower pace, adapted games, or more rest between play.
Our sessions usually take place at:
- Black Isle Leisure Centre – typically Friday afternoons (2.30–4.00pm)
- Inverness Leisure Centre – typically Thursday afternoons (1.30–3.30pm)
Exact dates and times vary, so please check before attending.
All equipment can be provided, allowing new members to try pickleball without needing to buy anything. You’ll just need comfortable clothing, suitable indoor court shoes, and a water bottle.
Please note that this pickleball group is restricted to members aged 60 and over. While u3a membership itself is not age-restricted, this group operates using concessionary court booking rates which require the 60+ age limit.
Numbers are limited due to court availability, so booking is essential. A small session fee is charged to help cover court hire and equipment.
